Kobelco Eco-Solutions awarded contract for
water purification project in Cambodia
Kobelco Eco-Solutions Co., Ltd. signed a contract with Cambodia’s Siem Reap Water Supply Authority (SRWSA) to supply Package 3 of the Siem Reap Water Supply Expansion Project under a Japanese Official Development Assistance (ODA) loan provided by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). This package covers the construction of a water purification plant, and the supply of equipment and electrical work for a water intake facility.
Demand for safe water in Siem Reap has rapidly increased due to the sharp growth of the city’s population and increase in tourists to the Angkor archeological site, which is registered on the UNESCO World Heritage List. SRWSA already has two water purification plants. One uses underground water and the other uses a reservoir as the water source. Since the volume of the water supply has not kept up with demand, commercial facilities such as hotels draw water from the ground. This has led to growing concern on the environmental impact including land subsidence.
The project calls for the construction of one of the largest water purification plants (capacity of 60,000m3/day) in the region, using the Tonle Sap Lake as the water source. The new plant will significantly increase the volume of the water supply.
Kobelco Eco-Solutions has supplied four water purification plants in Cambodia to date. It will continue to contribute to the water supply coverage in Cambodia by expanding the water supply business in the country. In addition, it is promoting the pure water and sewage plant business in Southeast Asia, which will contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the region.
